The 1970 Dodge Challenger “Black Ghost” was once a mysterious street drag racer driven by a Detroit police officer. Today, it is arguably the most desirable classic Mopar in existence. Dodge even honored the “Black Ghost” with a modern edition based on the 2023 Challenger Hellcat Redeye Widebody, and the original is now being prepared for auction.
The “Black Ghost” was on display at the Kissimmee 2023 event in January, where it was showcased alongside its modern counterpart. Recently, “DtRockstar1” released footage of the “Black Ghost” being paraded at classic car events, allowing enthusiasts to hear its numbers-matching 426-cubic-inch (7.0-liter) HEMI V8 roar. Although there’s no drag racing or burnouts, the all-black 1970 Challenger is a spectacular sight, now that it’s road-worthy again.
The “Black Ghost” is special for several reasons, beyond its survivor status. The original owner, Godfrey Qualls, was a Detroit police officer by day and a mysterious drag racer by night. He showed up out of the blue at local hangouts, won quarter-mile races, and then vanished into the night. The Challenger was modified with a muffler delete, aftermarket coil, and slick rear tires over the stock wheels, but the underrated 425-horsepower output of the HEMI V8 was enough for him to win numerous races before disappearing for good in 1975.
Decades later, Godfrey’s son, Gregory, inherited the car and shared the story of officer Qualls with the world. The “Black Ghost” is a rare gem from the golden muscle car era, as only 356 were fitted with the mighty 426-cubic-inch HEMI V8, and only 136 had the four-speed manual gearbox. Furthermore, Godfrey selected the SE package, making it a one-of-60 Challenger with the bundle. When we consider the color and other options, it could be one of fewer than ten examples ever made.
In short, the “Black Ghost” is a highly collectible classic that’s probably worth more than any other 1970 Challenger out there, and it comes with a story worthy of a book. Check out the video below to see this incredible machine in action and read more about its fascinating history.
