Reviving a Classic: How a 1958 Chevy Corvette Became a Pro Touring Diamond

Small Steps Lead to Big Wins: The Story of a 1958 Chevy Corvette

Sometimes, it’s not the big leaps that make a difference, but the small steps that can take you places. This was certainly the case for a 1958 Chevy Corvette that found itself in an aftermarket shop due to a fried clutch. However, what started as a minor repair quickly snowballed into a complete overhaul. The end result was a stunning 383 Pro Touring Diamond that went on to win several prestigious awards. This is the story of how a series of small steps led to big wins for this classic car.

The Hand Built Cars channel on YouTube recently released a video (which can be viewed below) that tells the story of a 1958 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster 383 Pro Touring build project. The car, owned by Steve Smith from Manchester, Maryland, had already won several prestigious awards seven or eight years ago, but the actual age of the car is unclear.

The car originally went into an aftermarket shop, Legacy Innovations in Emigsville, Pennsylvania, for a minor repair to replace a blown clutch and install a new rear end. However, as the gallery of photos shows, the project quickly snowballed into a complete restomod creation with a new tubular chassis, road racing suspension, and many other upgrades.

Some of the highlights of the build include the unique “50eight” six-piston Wilwood brakes, a 383ci V8 SBC engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission, and Forgeline three-piece wheels. The exterior is finished in Legacy Bronze Metallic and is a true eye-catcher.

The video takes the viewer through the entire build process, which started with a blown clutch on a C1 Corvette and ended up becoming a 383 Pro Touring build project that won the 2013 SEMA Show’s vehicle and the 2014 Detroit Autorama winner. It’s a visually arresting story of how a minor repair led to a major transformation of a classic car.
